Challenge the Competitor
Your P-dominant player is tight. They're playing not to lose instead of playing to win.
Say This
"[Name], this is exactly what you trained for. 20–20, you're up. I need your best swing right here. Not safe — your best. Let's go."
Set the Target
P-dominant setter or libero who needs a clear assignment, not general encouragement.
Say This
"[Name], I need you to own the next three contacts. Every pass through you, every set decision — you're running this. Make it count."
Reframe the Deficit
P-dominant player is frustrated and starting to check out when down 5+.
Say This
"[Name], I don't care about the score. I care about the next point. You're the one who closes gaps. Show me what that looks like right now."
Give Them Ownership
P-dominant outside hitter or opposite who needs to feel in control.
Say This
"[Name], I'm calling your number this rotation. I need you to take over. Not careful — aggressive. You decide where that ball goes."
Fuel the Energy
A-dominant player is the team's emotional engine. They need to feel the moment, not manage it.
Say This
"[Name], this is your moment. The whole gym is watching. I need that energy — let me see it. Bring the team with you."
Acknowledge the Effort
A-dominant player made an error and their energy is dropping. They need to feel seen.
Say This
"[Name], I saw that. You're fighting. That's all I need. Shake it off — next one is yours."
Spark the Comeback Story
A-dominant player is deflated. They need a narrative, not a strategy.
Say This
"[Name], every comeback needs a spark. That's you. I don't care about the score — I need your energy to change the gym right now. Can you do that?"
Ride the Wave
Momentum just shifted in your favor. A-dominant player can amplify it.
Say This
"[Name], feel that? That's the shift. I need you to keep that energy going for the next three points. The team is following you right now."
Trust the System
C-dominant player is second-guessing the system under pressure.
Say This
"[Name], we've run this rotation a hundred times. Trust what we built. Your job is the same as it always is — execute the system. That's it."
Remind Them of Their Role
C-dominant player is trying to do too much because they want to help the team.
Say This
"[Name], your job is serve receive and transition. That's how you win this for us. Stay in your lane — everyone else will do theirs."
Process Over Scoreboard
C-dominant player is watching the scoreboard and losing faith in the process.
Say This
"[Name], forget the score. We're going back to basics. One pass, one set, one swing. That's all we're doing. Can you lead that for us?"
Timeout Structure Script
C-dominant player is your system anchor. Use them to reset the team.
Say This
"[Name], I need you to tell the team one thing we're going back to right now. One thing. What is it?" (Let them speak.)
Give Them the Data
E-dominant player is overthinking. They need a clear, logical frame.
Say This
"[Name], here's what I see: their setter is going back row every time at 20+. You know what to do with that. Read it and react."
Confirm the Plan
E-dominant player needs to know the plan hasn't changed under pressure.
Say This
"[Name], same plan. Nothing changes. You've been reading this team all match — keep doing exactly what you're doing."
Reframe with Data
E-dominant player is calculating the probability of a comeback and starting to disengage.
Say This
"[Name], I need your brain right now. What are you seeing in their defense? Tell me one adjustment we can make."
Capitalize on the Read
Momentum just shifted. E-dominant player saw it coming and needs to act on their read.
Say This
"[Name], you called this. Now execute it. What did you see? Run it."
Analytical Timeout Reset
E-dominant player needs a structured timeout, not an emotional one.
Say This
"[Name], I need 30 seconds. Tell me what you're seeing from their setter. What's the pattern?" (Listen, then: "Good. Here's the adjustment.")
P-Type: Compete for the Pass
P-dominant passer is shanking passes and getting frustrated.
Say This
"[Name], I need you to compete for every single ball. Not just the easy ones — every one. You're better than this. Show me."
A-Type: Reset the Energy
A-dominant passer's energy is affecting their footwork and reading.
Say This
"[Name], take a breath. I need you locked in — not fired up, locked in. Feet first, then the ball. You've got this."
C-Type: System Anchor
C-dominant passer is drifting out of their zone assignment.
Say This
"[Name], you're the anchor of this serve receive. Stay in your zone. Let [teammate] take the seam. Trust the system."
E-Type: Read the Server
E-dominant passer is reacting instead of reading.
Say This
"[Name], watch the toss. Their server telegraphs every float serve — toss drifts left, ball goes cross. You've seen it. Read it early."
P-Type: Fast Reset
P-dominant player made a rotation error and is visibly frustrated.
Say This
"[Name], it's done. Next point. I need you locked in on your assignment right now — what's your job this rotation?"
C-Type: Clarify the System
C-dominant player made a rotation error and is confused about the system.
Say This
"[Name], let's reset. In this rotation, you're here. [Teammate] is there. Same as we practiced. Walk me through it."
